The Free-First Plan

Morning

Plymouth Hoe (free). The city's best asset costs nothing. Walk the promenade, see Smeaton's Tower and the war memorials, and soak up the view that inspired sailors for 500 years.

Late morning

The Barbican & Mayflower Steps (free). Wander the cobbled streets, find the Elizabethan Gardens, and stand where the Pilgrims departed in 1620.

Lunch

Plymouth Market (cheap). The food stalls in the historic market hall are the best-value eats in the city - generous portions, local traders.

Afternoon

The Box (free). A national-quality museum with no admission charge. Mammoth, figureheads, art galleries and Plymouth's story told brilliantly.

Late afternoon

Coast path to Jennycliff (free). Walk east around the Sound for the best views back over the city. Or in summer, swim off the Hoe foreshore - free, unlike the Lido next door.
