Plymouth is one of the most dog-friendly cities on the coast. Big green spaces, miles of coast path, and a pub culture that usually includes a water bowl and a biscuit behind the bar.

The Dog's Perfect Day

Morning

The Hoe. Wide lawns, sea air and plenty of sniffs. Dogs on leads around the memorials, but it's a glorious start for both of you.

Late morning

Coast path towards Devil's Point. The stretch from the Hoe through Millbay to Devil's Point park gives constant sea views and a good hour of walking. Royal William Yard's outdoor spaces welcome dogs too.

Lunch

Dog-friendly pub or cafe. Many Barbican and Royal William Yard venues welcome dogs inside - look for the water bowls by the door. Sunday roasts with the dog snoozing under the table are a Plymouth tradition.

Afternoon

Ferry to Mount Edgcumbe. Dogs travel on the Cremyll Ferry, and the 800-acre country park across the water is heaven for them - woodland, parkland and beaches (seasonal rules apply).

Some local beaches have seasonal dog restrictions (typically summer months) - always check signage
Jennycliff and the coast path east of the city are reliably dog-friendly year-round
Water and shade are limited on the Hoe in high summer - carry water
Several city vets offer emergency cover; save a number before a long walk
