The Perfect Day in Plymouth
One unforgettable day in Britain's Ocean City - planned hour by hour by locals
1 DayWalkableFirst-Time Visitors
Only got one day? This is the route we'd walk with a friend visiting for the first time. Everything is within walking distance or a short hop by water taxi.
Your Hour-by-Hour Plan
9:00am
Plymouth Hoe. Start where everyone should - on the famous seafront lawns with panoramic views across Plymouth Sound. Climb Smeaton's Tower lighthouse for the best photo in the city.
10:30am
Waterfront walk to the Barbican. Follow the coast path past Tinside Lido and the Mayflower Steps memorial, arriving into the cobbled streets of the historic Barbican quarter.
11:00am
Explore the Barbican. Independent galleries, gift shops and Tudor architecture. Don't miss the Elizabethan Gardens tucked away off New Street.
12:30pm
Lunch at Sutton Harbour. Fresh seafood metres from where it was landed this morning - the fish and chips here are some of the best in the country.
2:00pm
Pick your afternoon: the National Marine Aquarium (families - allow 2-3 hours), the Plymouth Gin Distillery tour (adults - England's oldest working distillery, since 1793), or The Box museum (free entry).
5:00pm
Water taxi to Royal William Yard. In season, take the boat across to Plymouth's stunning converted naval yard. Grab a drink at a waterside bar as the light softens.
7:00pm
Dinner at Royal William Yard. Choose from some of the city's best restaurants inside spectacular Grade I listed buildings, then watch the sun set over the Tamar.
Good To Know
- The whole route is flat and walkable except the climb up the Hoe from the Barbican
- Water taxis run seasonally - check times, or it's a 10-minute taxi ride
- Book the gin distillery tour ahead on summer weekends
- Sunny day? Swap the afternoon museum for a swim at Tinside Lido or a harbour boat trip
