500 Years in 5 Stops

Few cities pack this much history into a walkable mile. Five stops, five centuries - here's Plymouth's story told by the places where it happened.

Stop 1: Plymouth Hoe - Drake's Bowls (1588)

Legend says Sir Francis Drake was playing bowls on the Hoe when the Spanish Armada was sighted - and insisted on finishing his game before sailing out to fight. True or not, the Hoe has watched every fleet Plymouth ever launched. Drake's statue stands mid-promenade, gazing out at his sea.

Stop 2: The Mayflower Steps (1620)

On the Barbican quayside, a modest portico marks where the Pilgrim Fathers boarded the Mayflower for the New World. Their voyage seeded a nation - and the memorial plaques around the steps read like a roll-call of American history. The Box holds the deeper story.

Stop 3: The Royal Citadel (1665)

Charles II built England's most formidable fortress here after the Civil War - with some guns pointing at the town, whose loyalty he doubted. Still a working military base, its ramparts dominate the eastern Hoe. Guided tours run in season.

Stop 4: Charles Church - the Blitz Memorial (1941)

In March 1941 the Luftwaffe destroyed Plymouth's heart; over 1,000 civilians died in the Blitz. The burnt-out shell of Charles Church, preserved on its roundabout as the city rebuilt around it, is Plymouth's most moving monument - a ruin kept on purpose, so no one forgets.

Stop 5: Devonport Naval Base (today)

The largest naval base in Western Europe still shapes the city - see it from a harbour boat trip, warships and submarines at their moorings. Five hundred years after Drake, Plymouth remains what it has always been: England's ocean gateway.

Walk It

Stops 1-4 form an easy 2km loop from the Hoe to the Barbican and back through the city centre. Stop 5 is best seen by boat trip from the Barbican. Allow half a day with museum stops - The Box ties the whole story together.
